Board of Directors H.F. Stapel, Secretary |
Our companies have a long and proud history that began in 1874 as a part of the mutual insurance movement that was growing in the Midwest. Faced with few insurance companies willing to insure risks in the new frontier, neighbors banded together to mutually insure each other’s property against the threats of fire and windstorm. Those mutual promises among neighbors created the Home Mutual Insurance Company in 1874 to fill a need for fire insurance on homes in rural Missouri.
In 1893, Mr. Henry F. Stapel, a German immigrant, formed The Missouri Farmers Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Insurance company in Rock Port, Missouri to provide windstorm coverage as a companion to policies issued by local fire insurance companies.
In 1897, Mr. Stapel then formed the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company in order to fill a similar need for crop insurance for farmers. Our companies continued to serve their customers through the birth of the twentieth century, persevered through the Great Depression and now carry on our proud heritage into the new millennium.

Missouri Mutual Insurance Company Building Rockport, Missouri |
From our meager beginning as a "windstorm insurance company", we have grown into a company licensed in over 30 states, with policyholders in 19 states.
Those promises made over 135 years ago form the foundation upon which Columbia Insurance Group stands. The mutual commitment between neighbors to dependability, fairness and stability continue to guide our companies today.
